Wypadek zakończył 30-letni okres bezawaryjnych startów pierwszego stopnia; wszystkie przyszłe loty Protona zostały zawieszone do czasu zakończenia dochodzenia. Ostatecznie ustalono, że przyczyną katastrofy był zestaw żyroskopów prędkości kątowej zainstalowany do góry nogami. Ze względu na trudność w zamontowaniu tego elementu w niewłaściwy sposób, powszechnie podejrzewano, że zostało to zrobione celowo przez niezadowolonego lub pijanego pracownika zakładów Chruniczewa.
