Here comes the most interesting part.
The Russian who does not follow the news does not necessarily conclude that Ukraine is to blame for his troubles.
In his mental world, Ukraine is weak, chaotic, and incompetent.
He has been told that the country is collapsing, emptying out, and barely functioning.
It simply does not fit his worldview that Ukraine could undermine Russia’s sense of normal life.
But the gasoline problem is real.
It is right in front of him.
So where did it come from?
The answer, in his mind, is obvious.
He draws conclusions from what he already knows.
And what he knows is that officials are constantly inventing new ways to strip the hide off the tax-paying population.
Therefore, the fuel crisis must be someone’s scam.
Some senior official’s son planned the whole thing in advance, squeezed the supply, drove up prices, and made a fortune.
The authorities are blamed not for weakness, but for malice.
For some people, that produces bewilderment.
For others, anger.
We shall see what it turns into.
