I used to work with a bunch of the people who created the morphing effect in that video. Here's the paper by Thad Beier and Shawn Neely that describes in detail how it worked and what was innovative about it.

The important thing to know about it is that while fading between and warping images had been done in various ways for a long time, what they created was an innovative idea for letting an artist choose exactly how that was going to happen, what parts of one image were going to appear to warp and change into other features in another image, and making a seamless experience out of it that sold the effect to the viewer.

As others here have pointed out, after that video, the effect was EVERYWHERE. And, approaches that are derived from it are still used frequently today, in subtle ways that you wouldn't notice.

Thad Beier just died a few weeks ago, by the way, and it was a huge loss for all of us that knew him.
