One of the most photographed places in Amsterdam, the red and white "I am amsterdam" sign makes history.
This famous sign was one of the most visited places in the Dutch capital. Most tourists could not imagine leaving the country of tulips without a souvenir photo taken near the Rijksmuseum. Why has the sign been taken down?
The Amsterdam City Council argued that the inscription "I am amsterdam" has become a negatively perceived symbol and is associated with mass tourism. The removal of the Amsterdam symbol is supposed to be the beginning of the city's fight against excessive commercialism. It is worth noting that the Dutch capital, like other big cities, is facing the problem of excessive tourism. According to forecasts, the number of people visiting the country may double within 12 years.
These and other arguments caused the iconic "I am amsterdam" sign to disappear from around the Rijksmuseum. Something that until now seemed impossible has become a fact. Interestingly, the majority of Dutch people were not in favour of the removal of the sign. According to the NOS portal, 69 per cent wanted it to remain in place. Social media was overflowing with memorial photos. Many locals and tourists cannot accept that the sign has simply disappeared.
I would just like to add that the changes have not helped much, as there are a lot of tourists in this place anyway. Mainly because of the busy Vincent van Gogh museum, the Rijksmuseum, the picnic area and winter ice rink, all located next to each other.

Jeden z najczęściej fotografowanych miejsc w Amsterdamie, biało-czerwony napis "I am amsterdam" przeszedł do historii.
