Lewis Hine - The Great Depression

Lewis Wickes Hine (September 26, 1874 Oshkosh, Wisconsin– November 3, 1940) was an American sociologist and photographer. Hine used his camera as a tool for social reform. During the Great Depression, Hine worked for the American Red Cross and documented drought relief in the South and life in the mountains of eastern Tennassee for the Tennessee Valley Authority. Hine also served as cheif photographer for the Works Progress Administration National Research Project. Over 1200 Lewis Hine photos are held in the collections of the National Archives.
