"For context, this occured during a movie shoot and the scene required the helicopter to make a pretty hard landing for show. The pilot made the hard landing for the shot and then took off again. When he came in to land at the completion of shooting for the day, he realized the skids were too damaged to land again safely.
They did this very dangerous skid removal because it was the only option at the time, the bird was on bingo fuel so they didn't have time to get other equipment or brainstorm another option. So yes, it was crazy dangerous, but also an extenuating circumstance that was the only option. Nobody here was being intentionally reckless, it was just the only way to get the bird on the ground safely before it ran out of fuel."
